Millions of donkeys around the world are being cruelly and unsustainably sourced, traded, and slaughtered for their skins, which are in high demand in China. Collagen extracted from donkey skins is used in the production of ejiao, a traditional Chinese remedy. Beginning with an initial grant in 2020 and followed by renewal support in 2022, Foundation support to The Donkey Sanctuary assists its work to combat the global donkey skins trade and strengthen evidence links between the donkey skin trade and illegal international wildlife trade, including biosecurity risks. A renewal grant in 2025 continued support for the Stop the Slaughter, End the Donkey Skin Trade campaign program, with a focus on efforts in Brazil and Africa.
